Purpose:

The City of La Habra Heights Park and Recreation Commission was created on August 10, 1995.  Prior to that time, it was referred to as a "Committee."  The Commission consists of five (5) members of whom are appointed by the City Council.  There are three (3) alternates who also serve on the Commission.  The Commissioners serve for a term of two years and until their respective successors are appointed and qualified.

Meeting Schedule:

Parks and Recreation Commission meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center, Multi-Purpose Room.

Power and Duties:

The Parks and Recreation Commission has the power and duty to:

• Act in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to parks, community recreation, parkways, and street trees.

• Consider uses and activities for continuing use of The Park and The Park building.

• Consider ways to develop The Park and The Park building to accommodate individuals and groups using The Park and The Park building and make recommendations thereto to the City Council and the City Manager.

• Consider the annual budget for parks, recreations, parkways, and street tree purposes during the process of its preparation and make recommendations with respect thereto to the City Council and the City Manager.

• Assist in planning of parks and recreation programs for the inhabitants of the City, and promote and stimulate public interest.

• Performs such other duties as set forth in Ordinance No. 201 or prescribed by resolution, ordinance or motion of the City Council.

Events Held at the Park:

On May 18, 2002, the Parks and Recreation Commission held the "Avocado Festival" at The Park, which attracted a large number of people.  The events theme spoke for itself and as a result we had:  avocado ice cream, avocado horticulturist, guacamole dip, guacamole chips, guacamole recipe contest, best dressed avocado contest, silent auction, and several crafters, music, and games for the kids.  The event was a huge success and we are looking forward to another festival next year.
